What Do You Get When You Mix - Jungles, Veggies and 3rd Graders?

Today we started out share what we knew about jungles,
then we shared what we wanted to know about jungles
then we viewed and gathered information about jungles
through a visual tour of the plant and animal life of a jungle.

Students saw species of birds they had never seen before,
animals doing dances, and frogs flying.

We formed groups based on the animal we want to create for our next project.

Then we were given
THE CHALLENGE:
Create a Jungle Animal Sculpture Using the Following Materials:

Carrot sticks
Carrot rounds
Potatoes
 Grapes
Celery sticks
Toothpicks

Here were a couple of artists we looked at who use
nontraditional mediums including:

 matches
car parts and tools
pipe cleaners

Here is what we came up with for our sculptures!

Texture Investigation Journals

Today we got to create our own Investigation Journals. We discovered different ways to create real and implied texture.

We split into two groups
1st group experimented with the crayon rubbings

2nd group scrutinized what cool textures watercolor, straws and salt created.

Then we rotated so everyone got to try both stations.

Here are some students' findings:

Then we chose which textures to combine to create a new character.
