Bringing Depth to Our World

We got to learn about creating depth in our drawings!
We did this by turning a two-dimensional shape into a three-dimensional looking object.

Students first learned about using "feathery" strokes with their pencils to making small circles.
This is how they started to build up their values.
Then we layered our circles that to make it darker.
An example of our Value Scale and Shaded Sphere
We discovered the highlight is the spot that receives the most direct light.
Our light source was the sun.

This nifty tool helps us project what I am drawing right up on the screen for all the students to see.

We also had to create the core shadow line which is curved to follow the shape.
We create the depth by shading on the opposite side of the shadow line.

Once we had these ideas and techniques for creating depth
each student got to apply it to their own Spooky Drawing.

We learned that these priniplces apply to not only circles but other shapes as well such as squares, triangles, and all others.

These student applied the shading techniques to a different object with the same shape.

They created some spooky and realistic drawing just in time for Halloween.

Even Mrs. Latham learned along with us!
