Art Professions- Jungle Book Set Designers

Set- Design Lesson Part 1:
Learning Outcomes:
Students will describe different jobs that incorporate art.
Students will design their own set design. Students will discuss lighting that create different moods.

Brainstormed different art jobs on the board:

- architect - designs buildings, playgrounds
- painter
- illustrator- draws pictures for books
- graphic designer- uses the computer to create art
- costume designer
-cake decorator
- museum worker
- movie ( animation ) artist
- set designer- for plays and musicals

Then we got to be set designers.
First we have to know what our story is so we can create a wonderful set.

Review characters with kids:
- Mowgli- boy ( they call him a man cub)
- Baloo - Sloth Bear
- Bagheera -Jaguar
- Sher Khan- Tiger
Then we need to know the Mood or Feelings that we want to create.
Is it scary, happy?
We looked at examples and talked about questions such as:
- What kind of feelings did you have when you see this image?
- How does this setting make you feel? Why?
- Do the lights make a difference?
- How about the colors, what do they do?

Each student decided what kind of mood they want for their story.
Looked at examples of set designs.and went to the auditorium to see the space we would represent.

Jungle Book Set: Part 2 Environments/Foliage

This assignment started out with a KWL(What we know, what we want to know, and then we followed up at the end of the lesson with what we learned.)

Then we watched a video clip from the Planet Earth series about Jungles. The students wrote down as many animals, birds, and plants as they could see while watching.

we also looked at a couple of artists that use non-traditional mediums to create sculptures.

 Ryan and Trevor Oakes
wooden match sculptures, by ryan and trevor oakes <301-Pipecleaners
FOUND METAL SCULPTURE....incredibly close representation of a real horse given the materials
For this art lesson we got to work in groups to create our own vines.
These weren't just any ordinary vines,
each group got to pick 4 items to combine in their own creative way to create a jungle vine for Mrs. Latham's classroom and to possibly use in the school play, The Jungle Book.

Materials available for student to included:
( we don't need all of these, just what ever you can find)

Bringing Depth to Our World

We got to learn about creating depth in our drawings!
We did this by turning a two-dimensional shape into a three-dimensional looking object.

Students first learned about using "feathery" strokes with their pencils to making small circles.
This is how they started to build up their values.
Then we layered our circles that to make it darker.
An example of our Value Scale and Shaded Sphere
We discovered the highlight is the spot that receives the most direct light.
Our light source was the sun.

This nifty tool helps us project what I am drawing right up on the screen for all the students to see.

We also had to create the core shadow line which is curved to follow the shape.
We create the depth by shading on the opposite side of the shadow line.

Once we had these ideas and techniques for creating depth
each student got to apply it to their own Spooky Drawing.

We learned that these priniplces apply to not only circles but other shapes as well such as squares, triangles, and all others.

These student applied the shading techniques to a different object with the same shape.

They created some spooky and realistic drawing just in time for Halloween.

Even Mrs. Latham learned along with us!

Jungle Book Set: Part 1 Designing Animals

Lion and Tigers and Frogs, Oh My!
This project students worked in groups based off of a jungle animal of their choice.
We watched a clip from Planet Earth that showed various animals of Jungle.
Researching new species and facts about the jungles before
we create our art.

Students had to work as a group to decide on the look and materials.

This group had two different ideas but worked it out and included some of both ideas.

Collective Creativity

Today we got to learn about collections and share
what collections we have collected.
We learned about how an artist creates rough drafts
or multiple sketches to see how to create an image or composition.
The students wrote a list of things and memories that came to mind when they thought of Utah.
Then they created 2 sketches of how to incorporate
a few of those ideas into their own quarter design.

Here's what these amazing artists came up with...
